One week until a new school year begins. One week until summer is officially over and it is time to go "back" to work. I have always loved the beginning of school. To me, it indicates the start of fall, which is my favorite season. I love buying school supplies and new school clothes. In one of my favorite movies, "You've Got Mail," there is a quote that sums up my thoughts exactly.
"Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address."
But, with the excitement, there is some sadness, too. Sad that I won't get to hang out with my kids all day long. Sad that my house will probably not be truly clean until next summer. Sad that we won't go camping again (okay, maybe not THAT sad).
I have to remember the reasons that I am a teacher. I have to remind myself why I chose this profession. I will look at those school supplies and those freshly sharpened pencils and I will remember the joy I feel when I walk into my classroom again, ready to teach.
As teachers, we have to remember that our students are feeling some of the same emotions we are and students need to remember that teacher's are humans, too! We will miss our summer fun but we have a job to do and we are ready to do it to the best of our ability!
